The Baby Birdie Cake

Love love love this cake! I worked on it with my mom the night before my birthday. We just had the best time decorating her (the cake.) The color palette is playful and the stenciling came out so dainty. My mom worked on momma bird and baby bird. Our first time using marzipan! Pretty easy and pliable to work with and tastes a heck of a lot better. The nest was chinese noodles dipped in chocolate (easy and delicious) The whole look is sophisticated yet fun and sweet and I had the best time working on her (the cake.)

The Soccer Ball and Lei Cake

This cake was made for a special kid. When I am not baking, I am a nanny to two great girls. The older girl, Danielle turned 12 this weekend, along with her best friend, Bailey. They decided on a soccer and luau theme....naturally! So this is what we came up with.I had a blast making the flowers for the lei. And piping all that grass, leaving a bit of "dirt" was really cool too.

The Books Wedding Cake

Yes..... you heard right, I said wedding cake! I know I usually don't do those (the pressure!!!) but this one was special. It was for my cousin Jenn and her fiance Michael. They are both really into fantasy..Star Wars, Lord of the Rings...etc...So they didn't want just an ordinary wedding cake. Together we came up with this concept of a stack of vintage books left in the forrest. My mom did all of the detail work, the twigs, ferns, acorns...etc....which looked awesomeee! This cake is really stunning all put together and truly represented them as a couple. And that makes me smile.

This was a sweet cake. It was for an old friend's little sister's baby shower and it was cowgirl themes. I had fun making the botts, thought they were difficult! It always is when trying to make gum paste stand on its own. But I think they came out great. Along with the hat and it's customized buckle...the parents-to-be were delighted!

This cake was for a Big Lebowski fan, so we wanted to get all the details juuust right. We actually had the rug image printed out onedible paper using edible ink. The figures were hand sculpted by Matt (husband/business partner/master sculpter) and I dressed those bad boys! I love the way it came out.

This cake was for my niece's Sweet 16 party, which was Mardi gras themed. I can not believe I have a 16 year old niece but I was happy to help plan her party and, of course, make her cake. We went big. I mean, really big! It was super fun to decorate with the gold paint and the jewels. A really fun and creative experience!

This cake was unique in that it wasn't a cake at all! It was the first time I got to work with "cake dummies." Styrofoam cake rounds that I covered in fondant and decorated it for a Time Warner commercial. Which was really exciting! Another unique element was that I had to make three top tiers that were interchangeable. I thought it all came out perfectly.

This cake was a shoppers dream! I loved making the Nordstrom and Victoria's Secret boxes. My favorite was the Tiffany's bag. It really came out perfect. I had tons of fun making the tissue paper and the bag handles. All in all, I think it came out wonderfully.

The Lakers Jersey Cake

This was a groom's cake for a fellow named Jenkins. Pretty simple design. They just wanted the jersey with his name and number. It was all about nailing those famous Lakers colors and font. We then added the stitching detail and tah dah! The most fun part was the custom Laker's basketball court board. That was a super fun detail! And the client was thrilled.....

The Little Baby Shower Cake

I looooved working on this cake. The girly cakes are my favorite. I loved the soft muted colors. I loved making and then placing all the little delicate flowers.I loved the bow and the broach. And I loved making the carriage with the baby in it the most! It was so fun getting to play around and make something so sweet.

This is the second cake of this nature we have done. We call them 'caricature' cakes because we base it on a drawing of the subject rather than trying to make it look super life like. This was as surprise to a guy from his girlfriend. He loves the Lakers, his band 'The Teeth' and his Rickenbacker bass guitar. I think we pretty much nailed it and kept it clean and cool looking.

The Cop Cake

This cake was super fun to make. It was for a retiring detective, Gregg and was bought as a surprise from his adorable girlfriend, Linda. He loves 'Dunkin' Donuts' coffee and raspberry danishes. So we added his badge and gun all on a newspaper board and called it a day! Couldn't get more stereotypical cop than that. I loved recreating the logo and details on the cup and even putting the details on the gun was fun. We had a bit of trouble with the rain but all in all, this cake came out beautifully!

The Gibson Les Paul Cake

We got another crack at making a guitar cake. The first one we did was over a year ago and was one of our very first cakes. So we were excited to put to use all the new tricks and experience we have gained in the meantime! And even more so because we got to do it for such a wonderfully sweet client. Lisa wanted to surprise her hubby-to-be with a life size replica of his favorite guitar for their wedding day. It was, in fact, my first groom's cake and was happy to do this for such a lovely couple. We had a blast "nerding out" on the little details...all the nobs and buttons. And Matt did an amazing job on the wood graining with the airbrush. All in all, I think we blew the other guitar cake out of the water. Congrats Marco and Lisa!!

Most of all, I was really happy with the special piping on top, as the mommy-to-be called her bum 'baby bean.' I thought it all came out adorably.

The Princess Jasmine Cake

I had so much fun making this one! Super girly! Who doesn't love princesses?! This was my first time being able to use sugar gems. They really added a little pizzaz and were fun to work with. Jasmine was a challenge, but I think she came out pretty great. I didn't realize until later that I forgot her giant gold earrings. I got them on there before delivery but didn't get any new pics. Hopefully the client will send me a few over. Either way, I love the way this one came out.

The Happy Meal Cake

This cake was for a special little girl. I am a nanny during the day for two girls and the younger one, who was turning eight, has been talking about this cake all year. She knew exactly what she wanted! Her favorite meal! She gets a happy meal every Wednesday. So I had to pull it off! The best part was making the burger (just a rice cereal patty, airbrushed...perfect meat consistency.) I also had a blast doing the french fries! The wrapper was fun to make, but shaping the fries, a bit of airbrush and crushed sugar (salt), they looked perfect! She absolutely loved it! Happy 8th birthday Kylie Koo!

Well, my best friend had to have a California baby shower! Since I was co-hosting this one with her fabulous step mom, Julie...I wanted to go all out. After doing the more traditional tiered Winnie the Pooh cake for her Vegas shower, I definitely knew I wanted to do a carved cake for this one. But I had to incorporate two elements, so I could have some gluten free cake and some regular cake. I decided to do a giant honey pot with cupcakes that had little bees on them. Half way through....it was missing something. It needed Pooh....but how to incorporate him? That is how we came up with him falling into the honey, just his butt showing...put a little bee on top and....tah dah! It was a smash hit and got raving reviews! I was so happy I could do something extra special for my very best friend, Lindsay and her husband Simon and of course...baby Ava Jai!

The Girly Beach Cake

I had a blast working on this one. Since it was for my niece's 12th birthday beach party, I got free license to do pretty much whatever I wanted. Knowing how girly Sammi Lynn is, and how obsessed most 12 year olds are about Taylor Lautner, leopard print and hot pink, I kew exactly what I wanted to do! This one was all me and I enjoyed every minute! The details...as always...were my favorite. The "Team Jacob" magazines, the sunscreen and most importantly, the old school boom box, were so much fun to make! Even the little handmade shell details came out perfectly. Happy Birthday Sam!

The Pug Cake

First of all...animal cake are fast becoming my favorites to do. They are just so much fun and end up having their own little personalities. Like Elton the Pug here....I love how shifty he turned out, like he just did something wrong...a bit mischievous, even! We usually just do frosting for the animal cakes. Since they have fur, this mimics it perfectly. However, pugs are very short haired....what to do?! So we covered him with fondant, but then he is too smooth....the solution? I painted on a thin layer of frosting over the fondant and tapped it, it give it a short spiky texture. Then we airbrushed the whole thing. Turned out great! Some say..even a little scary, but I think that is a good thing!

The Caricature Cake

When I got an email asking if we could replicate an image from a caricature, I was excited but worried how the logistics would pan out....I knew we could do it! We have done faces before! Plus, this is one of Matt's specialties. I knew he would rock that face out...and boy! Did he?! The cake compared to the caricatures...is pretty close to flawless! Really happy with how this one turned out. Super fun and unique and different!

The Pooh Cake

This cake was the most personal cake I have ever made. It was very special to me and I wanted to do a really good job. My very best friend in the whole wide world, Lindsay had her baby shower in Vegas this weekend. The theme for baby Ava Jai's nursery is classic Winnie the Pooh. We wanted to do something simple yet lovely and I think we achieved that. The road trip was interesting. I have never traveled with a fondant covered cake before and the elevation wrecked havoc! Poor thing was in shambles as we arrived. But I had planned on doing the majority of the decorating at her house, so we immediately got to work and fixed the sad little cake up in no time! I especially liked making Pooh and Piglet. Figurines are my favorite thing to do! The honey pots could not have come out cuter...with real honey dripping over the edge and all! Shout out to my Vegas helper, Sara Otis and my mom, Sue and Madi too! It came together and was a hit at the shower. I was so honored to be able to do that for my bestie! Look out California shower....I am seeing a carved cake in your future!

The Green Lantern Cake

We were just too excited to do this cake. It was for a fabulous friend of ours, Ted, for his big birthday bash. The party was crazy and we were so honored to be able to pull this off for him. He loves The Green Lantern, so we worked together to come up with an awesome concept. We decided to do a comic book cake with the fist really popping out and a real working green light for his ring. It was our first time working with a technical element and it went really well. I love this cake so much. It is a definite high for our blog!

These pretty little cupcakes were for my sister, Michelle's big 40th birthday. We had a lovely family party with a teal and damask theme. I hand made the flags with the theme colors and little M's and 40's. I also made the pretty little cupcake stands and it all turned out so cute, I just can't stand it! I got to play with the flavors because she was so open and I came up with two variations that both went over well. Half were a chocolate banana with a peanut butter filling. The other half was strawberry white chocolate with a marshmallow cream filling....yummmm!

This was a birthday surprise for out super cute and lovely friend, Erin. She had no idea. She works in fashion and has awesome style...I always want to steal her shoes! This was a chance for me to play and be creatively free. I had fun playing with the draping and the ruffles. I put the dress form fondant on in pieces so it looked seemed up and down the body. The sweet little "E" plaque finished it off beautifully! She just loved the cake and it made me so happy to see her so happy!

I always say...the weirder the request, the better! So, when Paige, one of our very best customers, called in an order for a giant mustache cake...I became immediately giddy! It was beyond rewarding! I really really really loved doing this cake. It is a chance for us to be pop artists and go big!

I was ridiculously excited to make this cake! The client, Sara's, boyfriend was graduating from the police academy and they wanted to do something really fun for his party. This was the first cake that we had our new assistant, Kelsey work on. She was a huuuuge help! And did a greeeaat job! We had a blast making the donuts! They look so real. Good enough to eat! Every detail from the newspaper board, to the coffee cup with his name on it and the little drops of coffee....turned out so cute! It has an overall cartoony feel and I like it!

The Louboutin Cake

Well.....what can I say about this cake? This was, by far, the greatest challenge of our cake making career. I am not entirely happy with the outcome...the shoe was the hardest thing we have ever had to make! We did our best and logged A LOT of man hours on this one. But in the end, I think it came out alright. I do love the little Louboutin bag with the gold shoes clap...that was super fun to make!

This cake was a super quick turn around, but I am glad we were able to pull it off. It was for The Honorable Society Tattoo Parlour and Lounge's grand opening party. We tried a new teqhnique out when we used a variety of stencils to achieve a flocked wallpaper look on the cake. Then we executed the logo as clean and precise as we could. I think it came great!

This cake was for one of our favorite customers, Mariel! She wanted a sexy black corset cake with studs and black roses for a friend who is a designer. So, basically, Matt and I got to play and design the sexiest corset cake we could come up with! We think it came out beautifully! I really love the way the fishnets look and it is different than all the other corset cakes I have seen online. The girls loved the cake and promised to send me pics from their party! And we had an assistant cake decorator all the way from merry ole' England! Our good friend Steve was in town and we promptly put him to work! The cake came out great and we are pleased.

This cake was special for me because I made it for my sister-in-law's baby shower this past weekend. It was also my first baby shower cake ever! I loved making the baby topper. He was so cute in his little diaper, bib and binky. I really like working with fondant, I just think it looks cleaner. But the frosting on this cake was so fun and bright, it turned out great! And the wrapping paper I used on the cake board matched the gift I gave her!

I made this little cake for my sister's 17th birthday get-away to Big Bear. She really loves penguins and her school colors are green and gold. She loved it!

The Topsy Turvy Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum Cake

Something a little more traditional this time. We have never really done a simple tiered cake before and we have never attempted a topsy turvy cake before. I have also never made little figurines out of gum paste. New challenges! We rose to them gladly! It was a fun cake to make and we think it came out pretty great. I made the tweedles one night and had so much fun paying attention to the little details, like their little hats and bow ties. This cake was a surprise for a super cute girl, Paige's 23rd birthday and when we delivered it, she was very excited and surprised!

The Elvis Aaron Presley Cake

The Elvis cake we made for our friend Jackie's birthday this past weekend was quite a challenge! It was our hardest cake thus far. Half way through we were feeling skeptical that we could pull this cake off...but somehow we finished him and we were pleased with our portrayal of fat Elvis.

We really pushed ourselves this time . And we are pleased with the outcome. Our good friend, Korin asked us to do her birthday cake and she had a unique request.....Crucified Jesus. So we took the challenge and got to work. He is our favorite cake so far. So Happy Birthday Korin and Happy Birthday to Jesus!

The Basketball Cake

We made this Siamese Cat Head Cake for our good friend Liv's Birthday, that happened to also be on Thanksgiving day! Matt also enjoyed a piece the following day on his birthday!

The Turkey Cake

So, this was a big job! We were asked to make a Thanksgiving themed cake for my bosses work party. We were really excited to get started....I made a lot of cakes and we carved a pretty huge turkey. The little details kept us busy until the very last moment!
We think he's pretty cool. But we learned a bunch and know where his faults lay!
But, Hey! It's a learning process, right?!
We also got our next order. From our dear friends, Jeff and Liv. We can not wait to start on Liv's siamese cat head birthday cake! So, stay tuned for that!
I've added a new gadget to my growing cake making tool box. . .
A pasta machine! (Thanks mom for donating to Jana's Fun Cakes!)
So now I can roll out small pieces of fondant really smooth and even make thin strips, if I need to. Very excited about that!
